Hobsons was founded in 2010 by Benjamin R. Day, a laboratory instrumentation professional with over ten years experience. He has worked in Europe and Australia delivering consistent, high-quality service support.

Based in Melbourne since 2004, Benjamin's roles include eight years as National Technical Specialist with Mettler Toledo, a leading supplier of analytical and process instrumentation. Whilst in Europe he worked as European Service Manager with a US company providing automated organic synthesizers. Combining a firm understanding of chemistry and chemical engineering principles with knowledge of physics and instrument engineering enables him to handle a broad range of customer enquiries.

Benjamin has worked with a wide range of instrumentation, such as autotitrators, thermal analysers, FT-IR, lab and pilot scale reactors, with a capital cost ranging from $1000 to $0.5M. He is a practical problem-solver with wide experience in providing service support.

A science graduate with a Masters degree in Physics, his extensive service experience of lab instrumentation coupled with his professional, yet friendly approach makes him a real asset. He grasps the complexities of instruments but can communicate simply so that customers understand problems and options.

Trusted by his colleagues and considered a "safe pair of hands" to handle both instrument and customer alike, his cooperation as a service agent was frequently requested, leading to the formation of Hobsons.

“We are fortunate to have our sophisticated and expensive biotechnology equipment so superbly serviced and maintained by Benjamin Day and Hobsons Instruments. Such high calibre and prompt attention and detail by a local company is unique, and is a critical factor in our maintaining our world-class research productivity.”
